Top ways to make students more responsible

Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Responsibility is that one skill which we want everyone to have for a better world and to make everything around us work smoothly. Parents and teachers are so focused on the other qualities and skill building that they often believe responsibility will come along as they grow.

Being a responsible person goes a long way so teachers and parents should start the lessons at an early age, so they become part of life. Responsibility is no way a burden, but instead, it is a joy which most should learn to have as a power.

Parents and teachers across the globe understand the importance of responsibility and how it is positively contributing to the world. Teachers of international schools such as American schools in Sharjah make it a point to help students be more responsible in everything they do on a daily basis. Kids can only be responsible to the extent we support and believe in them.

Top ways to make students more responsible

This article is going to share some ways to boost the sense of responsibility in the students in a smooth way.

Essential ways to help students be more responsible in their life:

Children learn by observation, so if they see you lazying around or not take any responsibility, then they like to believe it is a norm. You need to teach them something you follow by heart, and they can also relate to. Instead of dominating give your children control on how they approach things and all you have to do is support them.

Following are some of the ways teachers and parents can instill a sense of responsibility without feeling like it is a burden:

Give them duties:

This is the first thing you have to do is assign them duties even they are little. For example, give them tasks to help the peer in a classroom or overseeing if someone liter at the school.

This will give them the idea that they need to make things happen, and only they can do it. Assigned work will have more value because it will increase the interest of the children.

Make a routine of daily tasks:

Another essential thing to consider is that children will have a proper structure of the daily routine. This will not outline your expectations of them but also make them a part of your daily routine. In other words, they should learn to contribute positively to their routine.

The routine should involve tasks which are easy to handle, and there are not a lot of steps involved. The tasks would increase as they grow and are ready to take on more responsibilities.

Go step-by-step:

When you are teaching the responsibility in daily work or just in the interaction, then you need to make sure that you are not forcefully asking children to do that. Rushing will only make them feel this aspect as a burden, and they will try to dodge that to the best of their ability.

Teachers in different parts of the world, such as teaching staff of American schools in Sharjah believe that rushing will only make it difficult for students to be responsible.

Concluding thoughts:

Being responsible is essential, and one of the expected traits for surviving in society. It is not inherent quality instead parents and teachers have to foster that for better tomorrow.
