Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Growing up there was always a kind of fear whenever there is an announcement for the up-coming parent-teacher meeting. It was dreadful, but now it’s essential could be realized and how it has helped learn and be better in school.

Child’s education is a collaboration of both parents and teachers, and effective parent-teacher collaboration can enhance educational progress and learning of a child. The school takes into consideration the importance of parent-teacher meeting such as American schools in Sharjah and use this meeting for developing a better understanding of child’s behavior as well as how to make it better.

During this meeting, parents have to opportunity of one-to-one meeting with the teachers and learn about how their child is performing at school.

This will also help them build a rapport and come up with a shared goal for their child which will ensure that child has the best experience at school.

Teacher-parent meeting is essential because it will

Build a partnership

Children are dependent on the parents and teacher for the growth and development. The outlook of both parents and teachers matter and the way they treat a child in their respective environment also impact the behavior of the child. Teachers can ask input for the children to deal with the odd behavior of a child or how to tackle child nicely.

Parents can share the after-school activities and how these activities can actually impact the life of a child. Current status of family relationships, home environment, and hobbies can also give an insight into the life of a student and what makes him or her tick. Parents can also share how they actively take part in making sure that homework is complete and they come prepared to school.

In other words, this understanding developed during these meetings at American schools in Sharjah can build a positive relationship.

Gathering information and developing a plan

Once parents have formed a supportive and cordial relationship with the teachers after the exchange of information, then it is important to discuss the weaknesses. The information exchanged can be about the overall performance of the child, their behavior with peers and their participation in the extra-curricular activities.

For example, if the student is weak in science, then both sides can come with a plan on how to improve that. The plan should be developed by considering the learning speed of the child, the time it might require to make any changes in the regular work and lastly what kind of strategy will work for students. The teacher can give information about the methodology which they think is best such home tutoring, more exercise to practice at home and whether more focused attention from the teacher.

Learn about daily experience of child

You child spend half of the day at school which means teachers are aware of how their day is going. What exactly they like doing while being in school and what bothers them. Who are their close friends and what they might see while making new friends? Parents will understand their relationship and behavior with other people and how it can be improved.

Parents who have a keen interest in the child’s school day and their experience can coach and encourage them in a right way. A parent can take notes while discussing and reviewing the academic reports of their children because there are a lot of things which are being presented during the meeting but might not be able to recall everything. Therefore, good notes always help!

Active discussion

A child is parent’s responsibility, so they have to be proactive in understanding the school experience of the child. The teacher is going to tell the basics, but it is the parent who has to ask about improvement, challenges and learning process of their child. Asking about strengths and weakness might break the ice when you first meet the teacher and then the probing can actually lead the way. Teachers usually are cordial just the way American schools in Sharjah have maintained high-quality teaching staff. But the discussion solely depends on the interest of the parent. For example, if parents are just reviewing the reports and not giving input, then the teacher will also be limited.
